Egypt: Release Badr Mohamed now

Badr Mohamed arbitrarily detained

In the wrong place at the wrong time

In a grossly unfair trial, 28-year-old Badr Mohamed was unjustly sentenced to five years in prison in January 2023. The charges against him relate to the Ramsis Square protests on August 16, 2013, which were violently broken up by security forces. Badr Mohamed was only 17 years old at the time.

Ten years ago, Badr Mohamed happened to be in the vicinity of the protests in Ramses Square in Cairo when security forces began violently dispersing protesters, killing 97 people. Badr got caught in the crowd and was arrested along with hundreds of others.

After three months in an adult prison, Badr was released in November 2013. However, in May 2020, he was arrested by security forces in front of his wife who was expecting their daughter at the time.

Badr Mohamed's trial took place before the terrorism circuit of the Cairo Criminal Court and violated various procedural rights, such as the right to an adequate defense. The prison where Badr is being held is known for its inhumane detention conditions. Although Badr suffers from impaired vision, toothache and insomnia, and his mental health is impaired, he does not receive medical care.

Badr Mohamed's daughter was born during his detention and only knows her father from short visits to the prison. Badr Mohamed must be released from arbitrary detention immediately and until then receive medical care and access to his family and legal counsel!

Demand Badr's immediate and unconditional release now!
